Tom Torlakson, the California State Superintendent of Public Schools, launched Team California for Healthy Kids in October of 2011. The organization works to promote healthy eating and physical activity in schools and communities throughout the state to ensure a healthy future for our kids. It’s goals include increasing physical activity in schools and communities, access to healthy drinking water, and access to fresh fruits and vegetables in schools. Healthy schools have been shown to have increased attendance and higher levels of academic performance.
Team California for Healthy Kids encourages health and community leaders to get involved. Interested individuals and groups can work together to promote the organization and its goals, participate in school health advisory committees, and create and implement policies which support school health.
In Ventura County, Team California for Healthy Kids is hosting a kickoff event on October 19 for school district superintendents, principals, directors of food and nutrition services, and local Board of Education members. For more information, check out the flyer.
