Gathering Community Support – Eagle Rock Takes Back the Boulevard

Take Back the Boulevard is an initiative created by residents to improve the quality of life in Eagle Rock through equalizing the mode share on Colorado Boulevard. In Eagle Rock, Colorado Boulevard is the main thoroughfare, a 6 lane roadway connecting major highways and freeways. A more equitable mode share on Colorado Boulevard will facilitate more transportation options and economic opportunities. On the Boulevard, 83% of the distance between one store front to another – 120 feet – is dedicated to vehicular traffic only. Of the 120 feet of public space, including sidewalks and roads, pedestrians and bicyclists are confined to 20 feet of area. Read more of this post

Upcoming Webinar (5/17): Joint Use Agreements 101

One of the biggest obstacles many communities face in encouraging children and their families to be physically active is a lack of accessible open spaces and athletic facilities. But addressing the issue won’t necessarily require building parks or fitness centers. It could be as simple as unlocking a gate.

Most local schools have playgrounds, gyms, fields, basketball courts and open space, but school officials often close these facilities after school because of legitimate concerns over cost, vandalism, security and liability in case of injury.

Unfortunately, that means kids have a harder time being active after school — but there is a solution. Many schools and local governments have partnered to create shared-use agreements that allow school playgrounds and gyms to be used after-school to support physical activity among all community members.

PreventObesity.net is scheduled to host a free webinar at 2 p.m. EST on Thursday 5/17 about these agreements, also called joint use agreements. Speakers will explain the basic concept of the agreements, talk about how they help address childhood obesity and provide insight into navigating local laws and regulations to craft them.

PreventObesity.net’s Rebecca Frank will moderate the session alongside Manal Aboelata of the Prevention Institute. Scheduled speakers include Dr. John Spengler from the University of Florida, Dr. Jamie Chriqui from the University of Illinois at Chicago and Genoveva Islas-Hooker of the Central California Regional Obesity Prevention Program.

May Complete Streets Action Team Meeting

Background:

In California, Complete Streets Policy Legislation exists at the state level with AB1358 (2008), requiring cities and counties to include complete streets policies as part of their general plans as they are updated.  There is also statewide policy on Complete Streets at Caltrans through Deputy Directive 64-R1, and revisions to the CA Highway Design Manual are taking place now.  Throughout California, many counties and other local jurisdictions have, or are in the process of implementing complete streets policies.

On our March call we discussed some of the alternative tools (other than Auto LOS) that can be used for implementing complete streets.  There was an interest in talking about methods that can be used to create different standards for urban and rural areas within a jurisdiction as well as an interest in learning more about the individual methods.

This action team will be meeting via conference call on  May 9th, 10-11 am.

Conference Call Number: 1-866-394-4146
Access Code: 553816012#
