Making the Most of MAP-21: Putting the Federal Transportation Law to Work in Los Angeles

Map 21

Join Transportation for America, Move LA, the Los Angeles Alliance for a New Economy (LAANE), the Rails to Trails Conservancy, and the Safe Routes to School National Partnership:

We will be having a discussion of the new two-year $105 billion federal transportation law, MAP-21, and the challenges and opportunities it presents for expanding transit, investing in walkable and bikeable communities, and creating good jobs.

  • How can LA build momentum for expanding and accelerating transit investments in MAP-21 and the next federal bill?
  • How can California and its regions maintain and increase funding for bicycle and pedestrian investments as Congress takes a fresh look?
  • What tools does MAP-21 provide for workforce development and promote good jobs, and how can we build on this for the next round??

Travel in Los Angeles County per 2009 National Household Travel Survey

People say nobody walks in LA? That’s not what the data shows. Actually more than 17% of all Los Angeles County Trips are done on foot!

We are pleased to be able to share with our partners two briefs on travel trends in Los Angeles County:

1. Travel in LA County – All Trips (pdf)

2. Travel in LA County – School Trips (pdf)

Here in Los Angeles County, our community members are walking and biking but our transportation policies and investments are not mirroring those modes and have great opportunity to address that.  It is our goal to help use data like the National Household Travel Survey to better inform future transportation discussions. Please share this data and let us know what you think.

While reviewing this data, it feels critical to also keep in mind funding and safety trends:

Interested more in statewide trends, more than just what’s happening Los Angeles County? Then please take a look at the Walking and Biking in California report  that was recently released from Caltrans.

It’s no secret we love supporting data driven policy frameworks & investments, and thanks to the National Household Travel Survey 2009 data, we now know much more about travel patterns in Los Angeles County. The Safe Routes to School National Partnership SoCal staff and partners will be digesting this data and synthesizing more in the months to come.  We welcome feedback and reactions in the comment section below.
