Action Alert – Safe Routes to School bill needs your support before April 15!
In January, over 7,000 advocates and supporters signed a petition to Governor Brown requesting that Safe Routes to School and a number of key active transportation programs be protected under the Administration’s proposed new Active Transportation Program in the 2013-14 budget. Safe Routes to School National Partnership, CPEHN, PolicyLink, California Walks, Prevention Institute and other allies are recommending the Administration maintain a minimum guarantee of funding for Safe Routes to School, but so far our negotiations have reached a stalemate on this issue. In order to rally the State Legislature to support the continued dedicated funding for the program, Assemblymember Tom Ammiano (San Francisco) has authored Assembly Bill 1194 that would maintain the Safe Routes to School Program as an independent, state-managed program with dedicated, level funding. Join the bill sponsor, the Safe Routes to School National Partnership, in support of AB 1194!

The California Air Resources Board will be holding 3 public hearings to gather input on the investment of cap-and-trade auction proceeds to support the State’s effort to reduce the greenhouse gases (GHG) that contribute to climate change. Active transportation offers unique advantages to simultaneous reduce GHG emissions while improving public health, reducing congestion, improving livability and public safety. Increasing investments in Safe Routes to School programs, bicycle and pedestrian infrastructure and first-last mile connections to public transit will support the goals of AB 32 and SB 375. We encourage the administration to set aside a significant portion of the cap and trade revenues for these purposes.
Join us in providing comments to the administration on this important topic. The Safe Routes to School National Partnership has developed the following talking points and nexus document for your use.
If you cannot attend in person, written comments are encouraged and can be submitted here by March 8th.

Human Impact Partners has created a report reviewing and assessing the Sustainable Communities Strategies (SCS) plans currently in development by four California MPO’s: the San Diego Association of Governments (SANDAG), Sacramento Area Council of Governments (SACOG), Southern California Association of Governments (SCAG), and the Metropolitan Transportation Commission (MTC). To date, three of these MPO’s (SANDAG, SACOG, and SCAG) have adopted SCS as part of their regional transportation plans, while MTC is expected to in 2013. The approved SCS plans fulfill all 13 health and equity metrics identified in 2011 to help regional planning organizations elevate the health and equity outcomes of SCS processes.
The document highlights the great work some regional planning organizations have done to include health and equity in their strategic plans and showcases opportunities for other MPO’s developing their first SCS to fulfill metrics not yet achieved by fellow planning organizations.
